An op-ed piece in the LA Times called on the Obama administration to cancel the four decades old failed US policy of travel and trade restrictions between the US and Cuba. The editor instead proposes a new user-friendly policy based on the time tested Watts riots philosophy of "Can't we all get along?" Dangle a carrot at the end of the stick rather than continuously beating them over the head with the stick (which after 40 plus years hasn't produced the desired result). They say we should try something else...and I couldn't agree more.

Cuba has ordered all military forces and a large portion of the civilian population to participate in three days of intense military excercises across the island. These excercises are designed to protect the nation against a US invasion.

I read this as the Castro Brothers way of stirring the pot and reminding the US that Afghanistan isn't our only battle front; that we should not overlook what's happening 90 miles from our shore.

The United Nations General Assembly voted 187 to 3 to condemn the 47 year-old US trade embargo with the island of Cuba. This bully tactic by the US has only hurt the Cuban people and has driven them so far backwards that to a Cuban a trip to North Korea would be considered a luxury vacation. The US has lost all international support for its embargo; only Israel and Palau voted with the US which tattoos both those nations with the scarlet letter "T" for toady.

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos' meeting with Raul Castro resulted in the surprise release from prison of Cuban dissident and outspoken government critic Nelson Agular. Agular expressed shock at being released almost 7 years before his prison sentence was supposed to end. He called on the Castro Brothers to "recognize its errors and little by little, if they can't do it all at once, to continue freeing the prisoners of conscience."

I say it's the removal of another brick in the wall. Let's keep on talking everybody.
