San Franciso Chronicle... Marc Joffe had a suggestion, in his Letter to the Editor, that the U.S. should "legalize medical tourism to Cuba and make such visits eligble for insurance reimbursements." He figured it to be a win-win for everyone.

"Yes! They're talking."

The Aug 10 issue of Time magazine has a brief article noting that the Obama administration is reversing a Bush era policy that has been annoying Cubans for years.

The Bush administration installed, in the heart of communist Havana, a bright electronic billboard with a streaming-news-ticker which constantly touted pro-democracy messages...and the Cuban government was powerless to stop it. The irritating streaming-news-ticker is located in the upper-floor windows of the five story office building that serves as the American diplomatic mission...sovereign U.S.turf...you can't touch me territory.

The Obama administration, in a gesture of both good will and a willingness to discuss and realign any and all issues between the two countries, pulled the plug on the offending billboard.

"Cuban economy is hurting"

There was quite a long article put out by the Associated Press about how really bad the Cuban economy is right now. It's so bad that the Cuban President Raul Castro himself frankly admitted that this is a "very serious" crisis with all economic indicators heading down.

Cuba could really use a big bucket of good ole U.S. tourist dollars right about now. Do you think maybe both countries are talking? I bet they're burning the midnight oil.

I have been asked to keep my eyes and ears open regarding the Cuban health and medical systems. When it's legal to do so Americans without health insurance or even under-insurred Americans would be interested in learning what Cuba has to offer.

The movie "Sicko" has had a huge impact on how people perceive and manage their health care here in the U.S. It also introduced Americans to Cuba's affordable health care system.

So, yes, once we're legally on the ground in Cuba I'll check out the health scene and report back.

"LAX - HAV weekly flights cancelled"

I called Cuba Travel Services in Long Beach to see how their weekly flights from Los Angeles to Havana were doing and I was shocked to be told that the flights had been cancelled. The nonstop flights were launched with much fanfare just three short weeks ago.

Reading between the lines I figure that the Cuban Americans, who were the only Americans that were allowed to fly on those planes: 1) Had a better deal than the $689+ r/t that was being offered; 2) The market was soft because of hardships here and in Cuba; or 3) Who wants to go to Cuba during hurricane season?

In any event I hope they try again in the winter. I'd like to have a West Coast nonstop in place by the time we legally start traveling there.
