There was quite a long article put out by the Associated Press about how really bad the Cuban economy is right now. It's so bad that the Cuban President Raul Castro himself frankly admitted that this is a "very serious" crisis with all economic indicators heading down.

Cuba could really use a big bucket of good ole U.S. tourist dollars right about now. Do you think maybe both countries are talking? I bet they're burning the midnight oil.

"Sicko"

I have been asked to keep my eyes and ears open regarding the Cuban health and medical systems. When it's legal to do so Americans without health insurance or even under-insurred Americans would be interested in learning what Cuba has to offer.

The movie "Sicko" has had a huge impact on how people perceive and manage their health care here in the U.S. It also introduced Americans to Cuba's affordable health care system.

So, yes, once we're legally on the ground in Cuba I'll check out the health scene and report back.

"LAX - HAV weekly flights cancelled"

I called Cuba Travel Services in Long Beach to see how their weekly flights from Los Angeles to Havana were doing and I was shocked to be told that the flights had been cancelled. The nonstop flights were launched with much fanfare just three short weeks ago.

Reading between the lines I figure that the Cuban Americans, who were the only Americans that were allowed to fly on those planes: 1) Had a better deal than the $689+ r/t that was being offered; 2) The market was soft because of hardships here and in Cuba; or 3) Who wants to go to Cuba during hurricane season?

In any event I hope they try again in the winter. I'd like to have a West Coast nonstop in place by the time we legally start traveling there.

"Orbitz jumps on the Cuba Bandwagon"

Orbitz, the giant web based travel agency, is a late addition to the fast growing Cuba bandwagon...a vehicle I have been faithfully riding since 1991. Orbitz is encouraging the public to petition Congress to open the doors for unrestricted travel between the U.S. and Cuba for all Americans. I second the motion. Everyone jump on the Cuba Bandwagon...let Americans savor the friendly Cuban hospitality and revel in the awe inspiring natural beauty of the Island.

"Did God create that color of blue exclusively for the ocean gently cresting on the beaches at Varadero?"

Don't forget my mailing list.

Josefina Vidal, the Directore of the North American Department of Cuba's Foreign Ministry said that Cuba is willing to discuss anything and everything with the Obama administration...without preconditions. Let the ideas flow freely but don't expect Cuba to give up it's form of government.
